Sporting Clays League Shooting Rules

Please read the following carefully.

The Sporting Clay League is hosted and regulated by the Warrington Sporting Clays Club located at 500 Yeager Rd in Wellsville, Pa. The purpose of the League is to provide fair and competitive sporting clays shooting to all shooters of all abilities, novice to veteran. There are no limitations to participants except when safety is an issue. Membership is required at Warrington Sporting Clays to participate in the Leagues. Warrington Sporting Clays management will determine the duration of each League session.

The Warrington Sporting Clays League is based on individual and/or team competition depending on which event is scheduled. Scoring is based on total targets broken by the individual or team.

The League

The League is administered by the management of the Warrington Sporting Clays Club, which includes scheduling dates and times of competition; tracking scores, individual and/or team shooter standings and individual and/or team shooter statistics; and accounting for the cost of targets and any other League expenses.

For any instance(s) not covered in these rules, the rules of the National Sporting Clays Association Official Rules will be enforced. Warrington Sporting Clays management will make a copy of these rules available for reference.

Individual Fees:

Each individual is assessed a one-time fee to cover administrative, prizes, and/or trophies. Warrington Sporting Clays management determines the amount of that fee. The individual is responsible for the payment of this fee to Warrington Sporting Clays prior to the start of the League. The fees may vary with each league and will be posted on your registration form.

Target Fees:

Shooters are required to pay posted target fees and tipping of trapper, in addition to any other individual fees and league fees.

Competition and Scoring System:

Each competition cycle (one week’s shooting) will consist of a scheduled number of targets. All scores will be recorded by a Warrington Sporting Clay referee on a standard 50 target score sheet.

When you come to the club, before you go out, you must:

  1. State which league you are shooting for.
  2. State whether you are recording that rounds scores or just practicing.
  3. If you are recording those rounds scores, have management sign your score card before you go out.
  4. Then, have you and you referee initial score card when completed.

Each target must be marked with an X or O, hit or miss. It will be up to the Club referee to call out and verify hits or misses. A hit is a visible chip verified by the referee. The referee can poll others in the group if he is unable to verify a hit or miss to make a determination. The shooter is responsible to verify with the referee for the correct scoring for each station. Once the round is concluded, the individual must check over score and initial their score card, as well as the referee, before handing it into management. Scores cannot be changed after this point.

Individual Scores:

An individual’s score for the competition cycle is the sum of the total targets broken. Once total targets broken have been calculated, a handicapping formula will be applied to each shooters broken target score.

Handicapping System:

This handicap system attempts to level the playing field with expert shooters and novice shooters alike. The lower the score posted for each week, the larger the number of handicap points will be added to the shooter’s score. And because the handicap is recalculated after each week, the number of handicap points assigned to a shooter will be different each week.

The handicap formula will be as follows:
Scratch is 40, and the maximum you can receive with handicap is 40.

Example 1: Score for round 1 is 36, round 2 is 38, average after 2 rounds is 37.
40 – 37 = 3 x .70% = 2.1(round down to nearest half). Add 36 + 2 = 38 for round 1, round 2 = 38 + 2 = 40. Handicap for round 3 is also 2. It will change as each consecutive round is scored using the running total average.

Example 2: Score for round 1 is 29, round 2 is 26, average after 2 rounds is 27.5.
40 – 27.5 = 12.5 x .70% = 8.75 (round down to nearest half). Add 29 +8.5 = 37.5 for round 1, round 2 = 26 + 8.5 = 34.5. Handicap for round 3 is also 8.5. It will change as each consecutive round is scored using the running total average.

Viewing Targets:

A view target will be shown to the first shooter of each group. This target is not to be shot at. It is for ALL shooters in the group to see where the targets are coming from. Each round is 50 targets. We do not allow you to shoot extra targets during a league round.

Gun/Shooter Malfunctions and "No Birds":

Gun malfunction will be limited to three per shooter per league round. After the 3rd malfunction the target attempted will be mark a loss. A gun malfunction has to do with the Gun and/or Ammunition (ex: safety on, hang fire, no fire¸ jammed shell). A “No Bird” has to do with the trapper, trap machine or targets and will be called out as such. When a “No Bird” occurs for a report pair, shooters must re-shoot the targets, making an attempt at both targets. However, only the “No Bird” portion of the pattern will be scored. The fair target of the pattern has been established, whether it’s a hit or loss and must be scored as such. If it occurs for a simultaneous pair or following pair, the whole pattern must be re-thrown and re-scored.

Sportsmanship and Shooters Ethics:

Warrington Sporting Clays Club rules apply within the realm of good sportsmanship. UN-sportsman like conduct will not be tolerated and may result in a suspension and/or loss of membership. Safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Eye and Hearing Protection:

Eye and ear protection is required for everyone while on the course, NO exceptions.

Make Up Rounds:

If you miss a scheduled league round, you have the opportunity to make up the missed week after notification to the Warrington Sporting Clays management prior to the scheduled round that you will be missing. You will have 2 weeks after the scheduled week to make up that round. The shooter may shoot the posted course for the week missed after approval by Warrington Sporting Clays management.

NO HIGH BRASS AMUNITION ALLOWED

Ties:

In the event of a tie (two or more individuals of equal score on the last night of League shooting) management will determine how the ties will be broken (ex: reverse runs, shoot off, a special game).

Scheduling:

Sporting Clays League will be run Monday through Saturday. Each week, target presentation will be the same for all League shooters, with the course changing weekly beginning on Mondays.

Final Authority:

For matters not covered in these rules or NSCA rules, Warrington Sporting Clays Club and League management, will have the final authority. League members are encouraged to offer suggestions or ideas to Warrington Sporting Clays management for changes and improvements to these rules. The decision to pursue any changes will rest with Warrington Sporting Clays management. Warrington Sporting Clays management may poll individuals for their opinions on an issue prior to making a decision.
